I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the communication and words of 'good luck' that flowed my way over my last week at Parkcrest. I had a very hard time leaving these kids (and the staff) as they had become a piece of my heart. I wish them all well. My 12 years at Parkcrest went by so fast. Thank you all for your support (and if any of my former parents and students are looking at this....this goes for you too) over this year and past years. If anyone ever wants to reach me, it is the same e-mail ([email protected]).
Hi everyone. I know by now you have heard the news that I am leaving Parkcrest. I knew this day would eventually come but I was thinking it would be at the end of the year and not before the end. I don't know my last day yet but I will be here this week for sure (May 4-8) and I think I will be here for part of next week if not all of it. As soon as I know my last day I will make sure it is posted here and I will have the kids write it in their agenda. I want to thank you all for your support over this past year. This is an amazing group of kids and I will truly miss them.
UPDATE.... I have just found out that my last day here will be the day of the track meet. Track and Field is in full swing. This week is our last week for rotations and Tuesday (right after the kids have a long weekend) is our all day track meet. If your child runs the 800m or the 1500m, these two races will take place this week with Mrs. Linfitt. Thursday at 9:00 for the 800m and Friday at 9:00 for the 1500. Wednesday, May 20 is the Zone 1500s (which take place here at Parkcrest), and Friday, May 22 is the Zone track meet up at TCC. This year the District track meet is on Tuesday, May 26. Because the turnaround time is so tight between the Zones and the Districts, it means that your child (should they make the Zones) will be bringing home one permission slip for both meets. Even if they didn't make the Districts as we just don't have the time to send home two different ones. They will need to know if they made the Districts or not when they come home Monday. If your child is a 200 m runner at either of the two meets up at TCC, they will need to be driven up as those races start at 9:00 and the bus doesn't make it in time. This will be the first year I will miss these track meets :-(..... I wish everyone well! We are working on plotting coordinates in math so that we can do transformations with the cartesian plane (sounds fancy right? :-). In L.A. we are carrying on with the novel study. For Science we are wrapping up Simple Machines and the new person will be doing Diversity of Life. In HACE we are beginning a project on Careers. In PE it is all track all the time right now. For Art we are working on a Mother's Day project (shhhhhh) so hopefully they remember to bring it home on Friday. Whew. If ever you want to reach me, you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Hi everybody! Back into the swing of things and April is moving along quickly. We have a number of field trips coming up before the end of the year and I think I will send home the whole bundle at once at the beginning of May.
In May we are going to gymnastics up at TCC on the 13th and the 27th. We are also going up to McQueen Lake for the day on the 19th. In June we are going bowling on the 11th and to the Canada Games Pool on the 12th. Then the trip to the Vernon Waterslides happens on the 17th. Keep your eyes open for the bundle of permission slips that will be coming your way. This Saturday our PAC is putting on a major fundraiser and they need everyone's support. It is called 'Test drive a Ford'. There is no obligation whatsoever other then to test drive one of the vehicles that Ford will have on site. For every test drive they have.....Ford will donate $20 to Parkcrest. It is just that easy. In addition the PAC is also having an outdoor craft fair. So while you are waiting for your turn to test drive, you get to browse the many items that will be available to buy. Please come on out and support Parkcrest! In LA we have started our new novel. It is the first in a series called 'Island'. We are starting with 'Shipwreck'. For HACE we have been working on safety and they students are currently doing skits for Road Safety. In Math we have begun geometry by starting to measure angles. For PE we are doing a week of cooperative games outdoors and then we will begin Track and Field. Please make sure that your child has appropriate footwear (not skater shoes). We have a clinic with Kamloops Track and Field coaches on the 24th and then rotations will start the following week. Just a note that the School Track Meet is scheduled for May 12 (weather permitting). The Zone track meet (no matter what the weather) is on May 22 and the District Track Meet (no matter what the weather) is on May 26. Students need to qualify for the Zones and the Districts. As always, any questions, comments or concerns you can reach me anytime at [email protected] Basketball season is now over. Thanks very much to the coaches who volunteered their time. Both the boys team and the girls team made it to the playoffs but lost in the first round despite their best efforts. I am very proud of all of them.
It seems that Spring has sprung (we may get another snowfall but not, I think, to stay). We are asking all students to take their boots home, check lost and found, and look in their lockers for mitts, scarves etc. Time to clear that all out! Just a heads up that we are skating again on Mar. 9. We do have some skates here at the school so if your child needs skates, please feel free to come in and fit them. There won't be another permission slip going home as I have their permission slips from the last time. In L.A. we have finally finished our novel study. It was a great ending to the mystery. We will start our next novel study after Spring Break (which is starting on Friday, March 13....remember that it is two weeks this year so we aren't back in school until Monday, March 30). We are working on writing, editing and presenting written work in the class. Each and every student has stood up in front of the room and read out stories. A HUGE accomplishment for some. In Math, we are moving on to measurement after a quick couple of days on percent. We have a project to do before the break so we are moving along quite quickly now. In HACE we are wrapping up internet safety and are doing a quick unit on nutrition. For Science we have wrapped up our grade 5 unit (Human Body) and are working on Extreme Environments (a grade 6 unit). After Spring Break we will go to a grade 5 unit on Simple Machines before wrapping up the year with the final grade 6 unit on Diversity of Life. A couple of people have asked me about Track and Field. We don't start up usually until the end of April (in fact our first track and field rotation is April 21). The scheduled meets are: School Meet (weather permitting) May 12, Zone Meet - Friday, May 22, District Meet - Tuesday, May 26. The biggest issue is always appropriate footwear and gym strip. Please make sure your child has running shoes (not skater shoes) for this time of year. NOTE FROM MRS. SARRASIN......... Boogie the Bridge and RUN CLUB This year's Boogie the Bridge is Sunday April 26, 2015. We have already set up a school team (Parkcrest Elementary) and registration is now open at www.boogiethebridge.com. There is a 1K Mini Boogie for $10.00, which includes a Boogie t-shirt (if registered by Mar 31), medal and post-run food. There is also the 5K/10K option which includes a timing chip, medal and post-run food. The school with the highest percentage of Boogie participants can win $200!!!! We would love to see everyone there! Starting March 4th , we will be starting our Run Club. The Run Club will run every Monday,Wednesday, and Friday at 12:00pm (provided a minimum of 2 adults are available) We will do one run around the block. Students will have an opportunity to eat lunch after the run. The Run Club is open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, provided they have a completed permission slip and proper running shoes (skateboard shoes are not acceptable). Intermediate students are required to change into gym strip before the run. Run Club permission slips are available at the office. Parents are invited to join us on our runs, and we are always in need of walkers too. Thanks Sophia Sarrasin Any questions comments or concerns.....you can always reach me at [email protected] This month seems to be flying by so I wanted to get a post up before February comes in!
We have gotten back into routines quickly and are much more settled than before Christmas (whew). In L.A. we are carrying on with our novel study, working on writing and editing paragraphs, and are doing our spelling program (online...ask your child to show you). In Math we are currently working on fractions and will move on to percent and ratios afterwards. For Science we are doing a grade 5 unit (Human Body) for a few weeks and then will move on to a grade 6 unit (Extreme Environments). In HACE we are looking at the complexity of relationships and how practice making sure that you look after yourself (eg. sleep, relaxation, nutrition, exercise etc). Basketball season is beginning. There are coaches for a Tier 2 boys and girls team. Please let the office know if you would be willing to coach a Tier 3 team. For Tier 2 the boys games will take place on Tuesdays, the girls games will take place on Thursdays. Just a heads up that Mrs. Erichuk and I are going to be booking gymnastics for February. Not sure of the final costs yet but it will be somewhere around $12 per child. Look for the notice going home next week. UPDATE: THERE WERE NO TIME SLOTS AVAILABLE UNTIL MAY SO PERMISSION SLIPS WILL NOT COME HOME UNTIL CLOSER TO THE DATE....... Just another heads up that I have some minor surgery coming up on Jan 20th and will be off until at least the 30th. School starts up again on January 5. Have a peaceful, restful holiday and we'll see you then.
I know I have put the important information in the previous posts but I wanted to make sure that I highlight the last few days on their own. We have been practicing a lot for our part in the Christmas concert performance. Remember that it is taking place twice (same concert). Both are on Thursday, Dec. 18. One between recess and lunch, one after lunch. We are last in the lineup so will be performing closer to lunch for the first performance and close to the end of the day for the second performance.....
We are still squeezing in some academics around the practices and the Christmas artwork. In math we have finished Order of Operations and are now doing Operations with Decimals. This will take us until the Christmas break. (we might be able to do some word problems before then)..... In L.A. we are still working on our novel study and still getting in some writing practice. We have been getting some art projects up on the wall (check them out when you come) and this Friday (Dec. 12) we will be doing an hour of code (learning how to do basic coding). Dec. 12 the Me to We kids will be going to the New Life Mission. Thanks to all of you who have contributed items to our box. Next week is all Christmas concert all the time. We have practices, the dress rehearsal and the performances. Almost there....... As always....you can reach me at [email protected] November is almost over and then the Christmas season begins. Yikes! 'Tis the season for sloppy, snowy weather so please make sure that the winter gear is dug out of the basement (I just found my boots yesterday....whew). Looks like we get some pretty cold weather right at the end of November for a few days.
A few things of note to pass along. Thursday, Dec. 4 is an early closure day in case anyone wants to come in and talk to me, I will be here until about 3:00. Friday, Dec. 5 is a Professional Development Day. No school for kids but I will be working on Science units for after Christmas. On Thursday, Dec. 18, the school will be hosting individual Christmas performances in the gym. There will be one performance before lunch and one after. I don't know yet where in the order the grade 5/6s will be but as soon as I know, I will update this post. Report cards will be coming home on Dec. 12. POST FROM DR. ANSELMO Starting Mon., Nov. 24, to Dec. 11, The Me To We Students are challenging all classes to collect the following items for Men and Women: Tooth brushes, tooth paste, mitts, gloves, hats, socks and scarves. Gently used items are welcomed, but there should be no holes in whatever the students donate. The tooth brushes and tooth paste have to be new. All items collected will be donated and dropped off to the New Life Mission when the Me to We students go on their field trip Friday, December 12th. A number of students have asked me if we can do Secret Santa. I have mixed feelings about this as I have had it be very very successful and also very very stressful. If you have an opinion, I'd like to hear it. Just drop me a line at [email protected] or write me a note in the agenda. In math we just finished long division. Both groups are now moving on to Order of Operations. In science we are on to 'electricity' where we will stay until Christmas. For HACE we are talking about healthy living and maintaining emotional health. In L.A. we are plugging away with our novel and working on writing good sentences to put together into paragraphs. In the computer lab we have been working on a number of things but our two main staples are Typing Club ( a learn to type program) and Spelling City (each week the students get a new spelling list to work on). Soon I will also introduce Ten Marks (a math program). All of these are programs they can access from home and I encourage them to do so. Especially the spelling (and soon, the math). For Fine Arts we will be moving on to 'performance' as we practice for the 18th. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please know you can always reach me at [email protected]. I am usually pretty quick to respond. Phone calls are harder as we don't have a dedicated phone. I will update this post as I get more information........ |
