Update: Cold and flu season is in full swing and we have run out of tissue again. If you could please send in a box or two, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
The last two weeks of January. This always seems like the slowest time of year as the weather is pretty uneventful and there is lots of ice and snow and grey sky. That fog doesn't help either! Basketball season is upon us and there is a schedule of practices and games posted down by the office. The first games are coming up soon.
We are in the midst of 'unplug and play'. As part of that, we are doing a book swap here at the school. Students are encouraged to bring books they no longer read from home and then take some new-to-them books home. Students can bring as many books as they like to the school but there will be a limit of three books to take home. For each book that they bring, the kids will get a token to take a book away. Please send books asap if you have any. In addition, Friday, Jan. 24 is 'come as your favourite storybook character' dress up day at Parkcrest. Students are encouraged to be creative!
We are getting into the thick of things as the second term is about a lot of skill development. In L.A. we are working on spelling, punctuation and grammar. We will also be implementing 'daily writing' to encourage creativity and idea development. In Math we are currently working on decimals and we will be moving on to rate, ratio and percent after this. In Science we have started 'Extreme Environments'. For HACE we are still working on nutrition. Currently we are designing menus with items geared towards elementary school aged children. The twist is that they also have to be healthier choices that would actually appeal. In P.E. we are working on basketball skills for another few weeks. As the Olympics get closer and closer, we will be doing a few mini units in subject areas pertaining to the Games. Currently your child is creating a presentation using the program "Prezi". They have researched an Olympic athlete and are going to present that athlete in front of the class next week.
We have a number of field trips coming up (slips soon to come home). Just a heads up, the total cost of all the trips together will be $15. We have skating on Feb. 13 (and then again on March 13) from 1-2 at Brock arena (we walk there but would love a parent who could drive over the skates...). If you don't have skates for your child, we do have some here at the school. Just come in and see if you can find a pair that fits. My best suggestion is that you come early so that you can take them to get sharpened (only a suggestion as they can get quite dull). We have two gymnastics sessions up at TCC on Feb. 26 and then again on Feb. 12 (the cost for that one is $12 which includes the bus). We also have a very special trip on March 5 to the Tim Horton's Canadian Brier (being held at ISC). That one only costs us for the bus ($3) as the tickets for the kids and two teachers are sponsored.
