In Science, because the topics are markedly different for grade 5 and 6, we will be doing shorter units and covering all of them. We are starting off with a grade 5 unit on Resources right after reviewing Scientific Method. I do a lot of hands on science so we all need to know how to run through and complete a lab. I also do the Science for Mrs. Erichuk's class and she does Social Studies for both classes.
In L.A. we received our novels today (Moses, Me and Murder). It is a book about the Gold Rush era and it takes place in Barkerville, BC. For Writing we will be working out of our Write Traits program (I have it at both levels and the lessons are similar so it won't be a problem). Speaking and Listening is done once a week as it's own subject and the rest of the time it is incorporated into other subjects. For example, this week we did short skits on appropriate and inappropriate behaviour in and around the school (lots of hilarity ensued). The mark will count for both Fine Arts and for Speaking and Listening.
In HACE we will be starting with making decisions, looking at influences, and using excellent study skills. The computer lab can be used for educational games (which I actually do allow once a month or if they have spare time) but I use it as a work period so this week we will look at Spelling City, Ten Marks, and Wordle (a spelling program, a math program, and a program to make 'word clouds').
In P.E. we have to wait to know for sure what days we have the gym. Currently, we absolutely have Thursdays and I think we also will have Mondays and alternate Tuesdays. Once the classes are finalized, I will be able to post a schedule.
Math is always a big question on everyone's mind. What Mrs. Erichuk and I did last year and found very successful was to split all 60 kids into two groups. One group is more confident with their abilities and one group would like more review and a slower pace. Each class will absolutely cover the curriculum so please do not worry no matter what group your child ends up in. The groups are not static and if it isn't a good fit, we will change students as necessary.
Just so this isn't 10 pages long......I'll wrap up there.
